Heat pump installation on the Cashmere hills and flat

We install, service and repair heat pumps across Cashmere, on the flat by the Heathcote River and up the Port Hills. Hill homes often have no level ground beside the house, so the outdoor unit goes on a galvanised wall bracket or a sound deck. Quotes are free.

Heat pump installation for two kinds of Cashmere home

In Cashmere, the big question is where the house sits. On the flat, or up the hill?

  • On the flat. Lower Cashmere has established family homes on level sections near the river. The outdoor unit can sit on a pad beside the house. So the choices are all indoors: a high wall unit sized for the living area, then bedroom units or a multi-room system if you want the bedrooms warm. We check the ceiling and underfloor insulation and the windows to set the capacity.
  • On the hill. Houses climb the north face of the Port Hills. There are winding driveways and sections cut into the slope. Decks are built for the view over the city and plains. Rooms sit on different levels. Level ground for the outdoor unit is hard to find.

Sun, views and glass in Cashmere

The slopes face north, so hill homes get good winter sun. Big windows to the view are common. That glass is great on a clear winter afternoon. After dark it’s costly, because it loses heat fast. On a still summer day the same rooms can get too hot.

A heat pump handles both, as long as it’s sized for the glass. We measure the window area when we size it. In rooms with lots of glass, we look at whether one bigger unit or two smaller ones covers it better.

Fitting heat pumps on Cashmere hillsides

Steep sections change the outside work:

  • Brackets, not pads. Often there’s no level ground beside the house. So the unit goes on a galvanised wall bracket or a sound deck.
  • Longer pipe runs. The best indoor spot may be a level above or below the outdoor unit. Each model has limits on pipe length and height difference. We check them before we commit.
  • Access. Steps, steep paths and decks with drops affect how we get the unit in. They also affect how it gets serviced later.
  • Wind. Exposed spots catch more wind and grit. A sheltered wall with clear airflow is better.

Multi-level homes in Cashmere

Hill homes are often on two or three levels. The living rooms face the view, with bedrooms below or behind. Heat rises, so the top level may need less than the bottom one. Separate units on each level let you heat each part to suit. So does a zoned ducted system.

Sound carries differently on a hillside. An outdoor unit below a neighbour’s deck can bother them more than you’d think. We check what’s above and below before we pick a spot. The rules are in our boundary guide.

Cashmere heat pump questions

Where does the outdoor unit go on a steep Cashmere hillside section?

Often there's no level ground beside the house, so we fit a galvanised wall bracket or a sound deck. We also check pipe length and height limits, and how we'll reach the unit for servicing later. A sheltered wall with clear airflow is better in exposed spots.

Do big view windows change the size of heat pump I need?

Yes. Big areas of glass lose more heat in winter and gain more in summer. A room with a wall of windows needs more capacity than the same room with a small window. We measure the glazing every time we size an install.

Is ducted heating a good fit for a large home on several levels?

It can be, if there's enough ceiling or underfloor space for the ducts. A house on several levels sometimes suits zoned ducting, with each level on its own control. More on ducted heat pumps.

Do hill homes need anything different at a service?

Exposed units pick up more grit and wind-blown rubbish. Brackets need checking for rust and movement. We cover both at each service.

How does noise from a heat pump affect neighbours on a Cashmere slope?

Sound carries differently on a hillside. An outdoor unit below a neighbour's deck can bother them more than you'd think. We check what's above and below before we pick a spot. The rules are in our boundary guide.
