What we check on a repair call

  • Fault codes and controller history
  • Refrigerant pressure and leak points
  • Electrical draw and connections
  • Airflow: filters, coil, fan, ducting
  • Drainage and condensate
  • Outdoor unit condition and siting

We diagnose on-site and tell you if it’s worth repairing or replacing, before any work starts.

Common heat pump faults we repair in Christchurch

Most repair calls we get in Christchurch are one of these:

  • Poor heating or cooling: clogged filters, a dirty outdoor coil, low gas from a leak, or a sensor on its way out.
  • Dripping indoor unit: usually a blocked or kinked condensate drain. Left too long, the water marks walls and ceilings.
  • Flashing lights or a code: the unit has found its own fault. The code points to the part. That might be a sensor, a fan, or the link between the indoor and outdoor units.
  • Rattles, buzzing or squealing: loose panels, worn fan bearings, or a unit that’s shifted on its feet.
  • Ice that won’t clear: some frost on the outdoor coil is normal in a Canterbury winter. Ice that keeps building means defrost isn’t working.
  • A smell at start-up: mould and dust in the indoor coil and fan. That needs a heat pump clean, not a repair.

Heat pump repairs and Christchurch conditions

Christchurch wears heat pumps differently from suburb to suburb. Tell us where the unit sits when you ring.

  • Salt by the sea. In Sumner and Redcliffs, salt air reaches the outdoor unit. It clogs the coil fins and can corrode the casing. We check both, and tell you straight whether the unit is worth fixing.
  • Frost and nor’west wind. In Avonhead, frost on still nights and nor’west wind in spring both work the outdoor unit hard. Ice that keeps building means the defrost needs a check. Keep the unit off the ground and out of the full force of the wind.
  • Dust in older units. In Wainoni, older heat pumps often haven’t had a service in a long time. Dust in the filters and coil cuts the heat output. A clean may fix what looks like a fault.
  • Rental heat pumps. In Aranui, a rental heat pump gets used hard and gets little care between tenants. The filters clog, the drain blocks and the output drops. A service between tenancies heads off most repairs.

How a heat pump repair visit works

  1. You ring and tell us the fault. Got an error code or a flash pattern? Pass it on. It often means we bring the right part.
  2. We find the cause on site. We check the power supply, gas pressures, sensors and controls until we track it down.
  3. We quote for the repair. If it costs more than the unit is worth, we’ll tell you.
  4. We test the fix. We run it on heat and on cool before we leave. Then we show you what we did.

Repair or replace your heat pump?

Repair usually wins when the unit is under ten years old. It also wins when the fault is a part like a sensor, fan motor, drain or board.

Replacing starts to make sense in three cases. The compressor has failed. The unit runs on an old gas that’s hard to get. Or it needs repairing every year. When it’s a close call, we’ll price both. Then you decide.

Quick checks before you call us

These take a few minutes. Try them before you ring about a fault:

  • Remote: does it have batteries, and is it on the right mode?
  • Filters: clean the ones behind the front panel.
  • Outdoor unit: make sure nothing’s blocking it.
  • Reset: switch it off at the isolating switch for five minutes, then on again.

Heat pump repair questions

Is it worth repairing an old heat pump?

Often, yes. A lot of faults are a sensor, a fan motor, a blocked drain or a control board. Those cost far less than a new unit. If the compressor has gone on an older unit, replacing it usually makes more sense. We'll tell you which it is before we start.

Which brands do you repair?

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Rinnai and Panasonic. We also fix most other split and ducted systems sold in New Zealand.

Why is my outdoor unit steaming in winter?

It's usually defrosting. On frosty Canterbury mornings the outdoor coil ices up. The unit then runs backwards for a few minutes to melt it, and the indoor fan stops while that happens. Steam that stops after a few minutes is normal. Ice that builds up and stays isn't.

Can I reset the heat pump myself?

Yes. Switch it off at the isolating switch outside for a few minutes. That clears some errors. If the fault comes back, write down the error code or the flash pattern and call us. That code saves time once we're there.
