Daikin heat pump error codes and flashing lights
A Daikin that stops and blinks is telling you something specific. Here is how to get the code off the remote, what to write down, and which checks you can safely do yourself.

What Daikin heat pump error codes mean
When a Daikin hits a fault it can’t work around, it shuts down and blinks. The blink is deliberate. The controller has logged what went wrong and is waiting for someone to read it.
On a wall mounted unit the light is usually on the indoor panel, sometimes combined with a code on the display. On ducted systems there may be no indoor display at all, so the remote or the wall controller is where you look. Either way, the unit has stopped for a reason and won’t restart until the fault clears or is reset.
Don’t ignore a light that blinks once and goes away. A fault that clears itself can come back weeks later, usually on the coldest night of the year.

Reading a Daikin error code from the remote
Most Daikin controllers will show the stored fault code on screen.
- Hold the cancel button. On many remotes, press and hold the cancel or timer cancel button for about four seconds. The code appears on the display.
- Write every character. Some codes start with a letter, then a two digit number. Get all of it, not just the number.
- Check the manual for your model. Controllers differ between generations. If holding cancel does nothing, the manual for your remote will show the right button.
- Photograph the screen. A photo beats your memory when you’re on the phone to us.
If your system has a wall controller rather than a handheld remote, the code may show there directly when the fault occurs. Note it before you touch anything else.

Daikin fault codes: what to write down before you call
A technician can work much faster with a clear record. Before you ring anyone, note:
- The full code, exactly as displayed, letters and numbers.
- What the unit was doing when it stopped. Heating, cooling, defrosting, just switched on?
- The outdoor conditions. Frost, heavy rain, strong easterly, or a mild day?
- How often it happens. Every start, once a day, or only on cold mornings?
- Whether a reset clears it, and how long it runs before the code returns.
- Any recent work. A new install, a filter clean, a power cut, or tradespeople in the roof.
That last point matters more than people think. A unit that faults after a power cut or a sparky has been in the ceiling is a different job from one that faults on its own.
Safe checks before you act on a Daikin error code
These are the checks that don’t need tools and won’t void anything.
- Filters. Slide them out and rinse or vacuum them. Let them dry fully before they go back. A choked filter can push a unit into a protection fault.
- The outdoor unit. Clear leaves, grass clippings and anything stacked against the coil. Make sure the fan turns freely and nothing is jammed in it.
- The isolator. Turn the unit off at the isolating switch beside the outdoor unit, wait five minutes, then back on. That is one reset. Do it once.
- The breaker. Check the switchboard for a tripped circuit. If it trips again straight after you reset it, leave it off.
- The set temperature and mode. Make sure it’s on heat with a sensible set point, and that no timer is switching it off.
Do not take covers off either unit, poke anything into the fans, or hose the outdoor unit while it’s running. There are live parts and gas under pressure inside.

Causes behind Daikin heat pump error codes
We don’t publish a code list, because the same code can come from more than one cause and the list would send you buying the wrong part. What the codes usually point to falls into a few groups.
- Sensors. A temperature sensor reading out of range will stop the unit. Sensors drift and fail, and the fix is usually a straightforward replacement.
- Airflow and filters. A blocked filter, a closed louvre or furniture in front of the indoor unit can trip a protection fault.
- Drainage. A blocked condensate drain can trigger a water protection fault, and you’ll often see water inside as well.
- Outdoor unit and defrost. Frost that won’t clear, a fan that’s struggling, or a defrost cycle that isn’t finishing will log a fault on a cold Christchurch morning.
- Gas charge and pressure. Low refrigerant shows up as a fault once the unit can’t hold its pressures.
- Electrical and boards. Loose connections, a failing capacitor or a control board fault. These need a technician with a meter.
If the fault comes with a burning smell, smoke, sparks or loud buzzing, stop. Turn it off at the isolator and call us straight away. That’s an emergency repair, not a wait and see.
When to call us about Daikin heat pump error codes
Book a repair when any of these apply:
- the code returns after one reset
- the unit runs but won’t heat, or heats for a few minutes then stops
- there’s water inside, ice that won’t clear, or a breaker that keeps tripping
- the outdoor fan isn’t turning, or is noisy
- you’ve cleaned the filters and cleared the outdoor unit and it still faults
Tell us the code when you book. It tells us which part of the system to test first, which saves time on the visit. We repair Daikin units across Christchurch, from high wall models to ducted systems, and we work on the other major brands too.
Call 03 242 1023 or book a repair. If you’d rather keep the unit out of trouble in the first place, a Daikin service catches most of these faults before they stop the unit.
Daikin error code questions
What does a flashing light on my Daikin mean?
It means the unit has logged a fault and stopped protecting itself. The light on the indoor panel, or the code on the remote, points a technician to the circuit involved. Clear it with one power reset. If it comes straight back, stop resetting it and book a visit.
How do I find the error code on a Daikin remote?
On most Daikin controllers you press and hold the cancel or timer cancel button for about four seconds. The screen then shows a code. Write down every character, including any letter at the start. If your remote has no such button, check the manual for your model.
Can I look up what my Daikin code means?
The code tells a technician which sensor, fan, valve or board the controller is unhappy with. It does not tell you which part has failed. Two different faults can log the same code, so the meaning on its own won't get you a repair.
Should I keep resetting the heat pump when the code returns?
No. One reset is fine to clear a glitch. A fault that returns after a reset is a real fault, and running the unit through it can cause more damage. Leave it off at the isolating switch and book a repair.
Do you repair Daikin heat pumps in Christchurch?
Yes. We repair Daikin units across the city, including ducted systems and wall mounted models. Tell us the code when you book and we will bring the right test gear.
