Rinnai heat pumps we install
Rinnai is one of the five brands we fit, alongside Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu and Toshiba. Its range here covers the types most Christchurch homes need:
- High wall split systems. One indoor unit high on the wall and one outdoor unit. The usual choice for a living area or a bedroom. See high wall heat pumps.
- Floor consoles. A low unit that sits under a window or where there’s no good high wall. See floor mounted heat pumps.
- Multi split systems. One outdoor unit runs two or more indoor units, each room with its own controller. See multi-room heat pumps.
- Ducted systems. A hidden unit in the ceiling or under the floor feeds a vent in each room. See ducted heat pumps.
Rinnai doesn’t sell a ceiling cassette here. If a cassette suits the room, we fit one from another of our brands.

What a Rinnai heat pump costs to install
A Rinnai heat pump installed back to back and powered from an existing power point starts from $1,950 incl. GST. Back to back means the indoor unit goes on an outside wall with the outdoor unit straight behind it, so the pipes go through the wall and the run is short.
The price goes up when the job needs more than that:
- A longer pipe run from the indoor unit to the outdoor spot.
- A wall bracket or a deck for the outdoor unit, on a slope or a tight section.
- A new circuit from the switchboard, where there’s no power point to use or the unit needs its own supply.
- A bigger unit, because the room needs more heat than a small one gives.
Heat pump installation cost goes through each of those. We price your house at a free quote, before anything is ordered.

Sizing it for the room
We size a Rinnai the same way we size any heat pump. We measure the room and the ceiling height, check the insulation in the ceiling and under the floor, and look at how much glass there is and which way it faces. A Christchurch villa with high ceilings and single glazing needs more heat than a newer room the same size, and a unit that’s too big costs more and runs in short bursts. Heat pump sizing explains the method.
Wi-Fi and controls
Rinnai high wall and floor console units come with Wi-Fi built in, so there’s no adaptor to add. Once the unit is on your home network you can turn it on, change the temperature and set a timer from your phone. We set it up at the install if you want it, and smart heat pump systems covers what phone control is good for.
Rinnai service and repair
A yearly service keeps a Rinnai heating at full output and catches small faults early. Ours covers:
- Filters washed, with the indoor coil and fan cleaned.
- The drain tray and hose cleared and tested.
- The outdoor coil cleaned, and the area around it cleared.
- A performance check with the unit running in heating and cooling.
When a Rinnai stops heating, drips or shows a fault light, we test the unit to find the cause before we quote the repair. Note the model number from the sticker on the indoor unit and what it was doing when the fault started, and give us both when you call. Heat pump repair explains how a repair visit works.

Replacing an old heat pump with a Rinnai
A Rinnai can replace an older unit of any brand. We check whether the old pipe route, drain and power supply suit the new unit, and size it for the room rather than matching the old one. Heat pump replacement covers what that involves.

We install and service Rinnai heat pumps in every Christchurch suburb, in Lyttelton, and in the Selwyn towns of Rolleston, Lincoln, Prebbleton and Tai Tapu.

Rinnai heat pump questions
How much does a Rinnai heat pump cost to install?
Installations start from $1,950 incl. GST, for a Rinnai heat pump installed back to back and powered from an existing power point. A longer pipe run, a wall bracket, a new circuit or a bigger unit adds to that. We price your house at a free quote.
Is a Rinnai air conditioner the same as a Rinnai heat pump?
In most New Zealand homes, yes. A Rinnai split system heats and cools, so the same unit gets called a heat pump or an air conditioner. We install and repair them in either mode.
Can I run a Rinnai heat pump from my phone?
The Rinnai high wall and floor console units have Wi-Fi built in, so they can be run from your phone once they're on your home network. We set that up at the install if you want it.
Do you put in Rinnai ceiling cassettes?
No. Rinnai doesn't sell a ceiling cassette here. If a cassette suits your room best, we fit one from one of our other brands, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu or Toshiba.
How often should a Rinnai heat pump be serviced?
Once a year, before winter, suits most homes. Clean the filters yourself every few weeks while it's working hard. Rooms with pets, cooking or dust may need a service more often.
